No war is won without a few bloodstains.

Tommas Rossi wants what belongs to him—he wants it bad. At thirty-years-old, he’s on course to become the youngest boss in the Chicago Outfit’s history. He just has to make it to the end alive. But being the boss of the Outfit means nothing to Tommas if a certain blue-eyed girl isn’t standing with him when the city finally crumbles. The crown is so close he can taste it. Blood paves his way. Every king needs a queen, but he doesn’t know how to get his anymore.

Abriella Trentini has always been the rebel. She’s quicker than most men, dangerous when she wants something, and more careful than anyone knows. Her relationship with Tommas Rossi has been a dangerous game she loved to play, but someone always has to lose. With choices to make, the kind that determines who will live and who will die, Abriella doesn’t know what to do. This should have been easy, but nothing ever is, and her time to choose is running out.

So much blood has spilled for this. The Outfit is in shambles, grieving and angry. The families just want peace. No one knows who will take the Chicago throne because too many men have a stake in this game. In wars like these, no one will let it go easily.

They’ll be bloodstained until the very bitter end.

And left breathless in the devastation of it all. Has it been worth it?

Please Note: Breathless is the fourth book in a series and should only be read after the first three books have also been read. It is NOT a standalone.

As is pointed out in the synopsis, this book should not be read alone. While each book follows a new couple, the war that these families are battling has been on-going. More so, though, Tommas and Abriella's relationship has been taking place throughout it all. Granted, they've been good about keeping it underwraps, but there have been instances throughout that their friends/siblings/cousins have noticed and/or pointed out that they were going to find themselves in trouble.

Why?

Abriella's brother, Joel, is the current boss, if you will, and he has full reign over everything she does. The only reason her sister, Alessa, got out of his controlling hold was she and Adriano fooled around one too many times and found themselves expecting the next generation for this famiglia.

One of the things I noted in an earlier review was how this so-called famiglia was more into finger pointing and one-up-manship than a true sense of "I have your back" family. That is something that Tommas wants to change -- but more than that, his biggest desire is to free Abriella. Everything Tommas does in this book is for Abriella's freedom -- and that alone speaks volumes for the love he has for her.

Coming into the book, you know that Abriella and Tommas are together. Tommas has tried to put distance there for her safety, but after years of trying to do that, he simply cannot anymore. He has little things in place to keep her safe, but eventually Abriella wants more and she fights for what she wants. The biggest problem throughout this all is Joel is still a major player -- and taking him out and down is not going to be easy.

Of the four books, this one definitely had the largest war/mafia feel. Each book had it's own amount of bloodshed -- both guilty and innocent -- but this story is certainly the crux of it all. In order for this famiglia to truly move forward in a true manner, major players are going to have to shed blood, and in doing so, some innocent lives are going to be lost. There are sad times as well as joyous times in this story, but watching as this Chicago war finally comes to a head and the fight reaches it's highest point... this was the book that I certainly was waiting for.

As the families are all so interwoven now with marriages and the like, I definitely enjoyed seeing out other couples and how they've grown in the previous weeks/months/etc. This is a group of people that I'm sad to let go, but I'm about to read the Marcellos series -- and while they came around before these Chicago war families, they do make a cameo here so I'm super excited to go back and read their stories. Bethany-Kris has a firm handle on this mafia world, where family meets famiglia, and I think she's definitely a go-to for this type of genre.
