I'm assuming that this book overlaps at least the previous, being Clint and Lydia's book, but I can fully attest that this book can be read as a standalone. Without reading the other, you may get a weird off-sense of insta-love between Lydia and Clint, but knowing they have their own story, you can completely understand that their story has it's own ups and downs.

So while Clint's keeping Lydia safe, Jack is minding his own business at his family ranch for the first time off from a Team's mission in he can't remember how long, when he gets the phone call. One of the best teams there is is asking for his help.

So of course, the SEAL that he is, goes for it, and he meets Elsbeth -- who is now under protection from the DEA as her family has been gunned down and raced around while waiting for her father to go to trial. The idea is to separate the family, and Beth heads to Jack's family ranch with him.

I enjoyed Jack's character. I did, however, find him to be an awfully big softy for being his big, bad SEAL self. He read Beth easily and treated her like a skittish filly, falling for her quickly and fully. His first thoughts of forever are just shy of a quarter through the book -- but no worries, because once that aspect of the romance solidifies, the drama and suspense steps it up a notch, which drew me back into the story.

While I enjoyed Jack, I became annoyed with Beth. I completely understood her timid ways and her fear -- all justified, of course -- it was her self-doubt and continual putting herself down, stating how low she was in comparison to her sister, that drove me batty. Once she accepted that Jack could like a woman like her, accepted a woman like her, and wanted to help heal her... she became more likable. In fact, there's a comical scene right toward the end that my heart completely opened up to her.

This was an easy read, if not a bit light for the genre, that any romance reader could find something to enjoy in.
