A Tortured Hero with a Heart of Gold

Growing up on the streets of Rio de Janeiro, Javier Almeida has only his older sister to protect him. When she’s sold to a human-trafficker, he vows to hunt down those responsible.

Years later, Titan Group’s Delta team finds him, tattooed and brawling, a vigilante protector with information they want. They take him in and train him, working him harder than a man should be driven, until he’s a soldier harboring an obsession. Ready for revenge, Javier ghosts his way across the globe, tracking the men who took his sister and working elite private security jobs.

Meets Sweet and Sassy

Jilted at the altar, Sophia Cole turns the reception into a one-woman party. She’s intent on devouring all the cake and champagne, so she can bask in the calories she’s been avoiding. In the midst of the revelry, he walks in, the one man she can never ignore.

Javier is her older brother’s black ops teammate—an automatic Do Not Go There. But if there’s one thing better than fondant and a buzz to ease the wounds of a cheating fiancĂ©, it might be a one-night stand with a South American military man.

It's a Game Changer

Javier didn’t expect to see Sophia again. He never thought he would even want to see her again. He shouldn’t have touched her, but his mind won’t stay away from her.

Now, Sophia Cole is thousands of miles away from the safety of her parents’ lavish estate and working alongside him in hell. She’s a staffer at an Embassy, and he’s there to keep them alive. There are bombs and bullets and blood-hungry enemies.

And then she’s taken. Gone. Just like his sister. But so much worse.

Cash is alive.
But who knows how bad he’s hurt.
There was an explosion, and he won’t wake up.

It’s the phone call the any Titan wife dreads, and the one that brings Nicola Garrison to her knees in tears. Crying and praying for Cash to wake up, she has one secret to tell him and now it might be too late.

“I’m pregnant. You’re going to be a daddy.”

Practicing the words a million times didn’t matter if he wasn’t coming home.

In her rush to save him, she lets down her guard. One slip. One tiny mistake. That is all it takes to let years of protecting her identity fall apart. Her time in witness protection, then at the CIA is called into question by someone who has the power to end her life—and the baby she’s carrying.

As the game of shadows and spooks, mobsters and goons comes back to hunt Nicola, survival takes on new meaning—protecting her baby, her husband, and her life—forcing her to make a choice that would kill her anyway in the end.

A Letter from Liliana Hart:

Dear Readers,

I’m thrilled to be able to introduce the MacKenzie Family World to you. I asked five of my favorite authors to create their own characters and put them into the world you all know and love. These amazing authors revisited Surrender, Montana, and through their imagination you’ll get to meet new characters, while reuniting with some of your favorites.

These stories are hot, hot, hot—exactly what you’d expect from a MacKenzie story—and it was pure pleasure for me to read each and every one of them and see my world through someone else’s eyes. They definitely did the series justice, and I hope you discover five new authors to put on your auto-buy list.

Make sure you check out Troublemaker, a brand new, full-length MacKenzie novel written by me. And yes, you’ll get to see more glimpses of Shane before his book comes out next year.

So grab a glass of wine, pour a bubble bath, and prepare to Surrender.

Love Always,

The fourth and final installment of the Only series. Must be read in order.

There comes a time when Emma must face the secret she kept from Grayson. But she never thought it would be while she stood on stage at Emerald’s. The seconds she has to convey that her life is in danger are lost in the devastation that she sees rip through him.

She pinches her eyes closed. “Don’t leave me. No matter how mad you are, please, please don’t leave me here alone.”

But there’s more on the line than just Emma’s safety. There’s the danger that brought Titan’s Delta team in to the strip club in the first place. A threat that’s too close to home, too close to the family, the daughter and woman Grayson plans to claim.

I push away the sudden spring of fear. Life’s too unknown, with hidden enemies and unseen terrors. The idea that I could lose her again… it’s unbearable.

A love story like Grayson and Emma needs a forever love, and somehow they’ll find their way to her fairytale.

{ blog hop with good tales book tours ! }

Know what is a fantastic idea?

Getting together a bunch of book bloggers and putting together a blog hop. One day of a bunch of book reviews, on books that may be old, may be new, and no one said, "Please review this for such and such date".

Know what makes that a terrible idea?

...deciding what book you want to spotlight for your own stop in the hop.

Let me tell you -- it was a difficult decision. Did I go with WINTERS HEAT, book one in the Cristin Harber TITAN series, because I love me some Colby, and I haven't formally review it yet? Or should I go with SAVAGE SECRETS -- the first TITAN book that I read, and therefore my introduction to all things Harber -- who then lead me to the likes of J.B. Salsbury. ORRRR... Do I go with the other friend in that fun little clique, with a book that I have reviewed, but it's a book I could read over and over and over again, and never get bored with it?

See?

Tough decision.

So, want to know what I went with...?

*two fantastic giveaways and links to the other blogs are at the bottom of this post.

The third installment of the Only series.
Must be read in order.

Grayson and Emma. First love. True love. And... they have a daughter. Abandonment is his curse. He left his woman, survived his team, and missed the moment most precious to a father. Until now.

I didn't know you were killing yourself with work. I didn't know you're raising our daughter. So help me God, had I known, there is no military force on earth that would've kept me from you.

Love needs to heal all, or they won't survive the collision of their separate lives. Emma must reach deep into her heart that is barely hanging on and find forgiveness. Grayson, wrecked with PTSD-filled nightmares, must prove that he's here to stay and able to rebuild his family against all odds.

I need to say I love you. But what I mean is I love you--in a way that defies definition and exists only in a world that you and I are in.

Only for Us is the third installment in the Only series. All novellas will release Spring 2015.

{ excerpt } .
“I’ve done nothing for you to give me that trust, but I need you to anyway.”

I’m not pressed against his chest anymore. The warmth that encapsulated me moments ago is gone, but I feel different. Life’s shifted—I’ve been hanging on this roller coaster for years, and now it’s as if we’re cautiously slipping toward smooth sailing. The lump in my throat eases, and my eyelids lift, my gaze falling on the most handsome man I’ve ever seen.

“What do you say?” He inches closer.

“I love you, Grayson.” Deep breath. “When it comes to us, I’m all in.”

"...You're the only family I've ever had, and I want that back."

We've now seen the relationship begin and Gray disappear, and we've seen Gray come back. In this installation to Cristin's ONLY series, we see Emma and Gray work for normal.

Gray's interactions with their daughter (his carbon copy, mind you) were adorable. And his Googling about toddlers, afraid he's going to mess something up? Oh, gosh, kill me now. He's so damn sweet.

Gray lets some of his insecurities show in US -- and they deal with more than being a father. He stood up to his old man, offers Emma what he hopes are answers, and attends a family function with Emma.
Emma's hand slips free from mine, and I'm suddenly on my own. Fuck me. She thought I was supporting her? No way--she was holding me together.
Emma's brother, Gray's once best friend, doesn't take Gray's coming back too well and Gray is terrified of the reaction from the only family he's truly ever known. Gray is still fiercely protective of her, even toward her siblings. He knows he's made mistakes where Emma's concerned, but if there's one thing he knows for certain, it's that he will spend the rest of his life making it up to the girl who has held his heart for years, the only one to take away his nightmares.

This is not to say that Emma's a pushover. We get to see more of her spine in this book and I love it. I love the type of mother she is, I love the type of sister she is, but more importantly, I still love who she is with Gray. Their high school love is certainly a more mature one now, even if Gray's only been back a little while.

I love that he calls her 'pretty mama' (even when issuing orders to 'move boots'). And I loved the Ryan/Gray conversation about being his baby sister/his world. Sure, these themes remind me of a number of my favorite TITAN couples, but they're said so sweetly, genuinely, that you can't help but wish for a guy like that for your own (if you don't currently have one of those editions, anyhow).

And oh, gosh, I love the Delta segue. Cristin... You have some happy ONLY/TITAN friends, that is for sure.

"...If there's one thing that you need to know it's... Ems, I was made for you."

review || ONLY FOR HER

OFH Amazon (1)

The second installment in the Only series.
Must read book one first!!

First loves never die but Grayson Ford comes close. Bleeding out in a war zone, he barters with God. Bring him back alive, and he'll make it right with his girl.

All I want is Emma. I need her, and I fight for her memory. A story. A smile. Anything. But it's all blank.

Emma is not his girl anymore. Time has skipped by and life's been hard. She strips to pay the bills, waitresses to fill the hours between classes and her third job. All while working to be the best mama she can be to the little girl who will never know her daddy. Even though Grayson abandoned her, she mourned his death. Until he calls, and everything she knew was wrong.

It's him. The him that ruined my life. That made my life. That confused my mind to the point that I can't figure out if I've been destroyed or set free. The him that... is... dead.

He's back with one objective--Emma Kingsley--and she never sees it coming.

Only for Her, Only #2 The novella series will release in its entirety this spring.

“You okay?”she asks again, voice sleep-soaked.
“Getting there.”
She takes a deep breath as she fully wakes. “I’ll tell you a story.”
My heart squeezes. “Yeah. Could use one of those.”

Waiting for these books to come out is like waiting to open the biggest wrapped box on Christmas.

So much so that when the serial is finished, I don't know what I'm going to do... I sure hope that Gray makes an appearance in Titan/Delta land, that's for darn sure.

When we left Gray and Emma in ONLY FOR HIM, we were years after that last night on the beach. Gray was in a bad military attack and Emma, who hadn't seen nor heard from Gray in years, was stripping to keep her daughter's belly fed and received a phone call saying that Gray's unit was attacked and it wasn't looking too good.

We open with Emma wanting answers.

To get them, she confronts Pops, Grayson's dad, and asks if Gray truly is dead. Pops, if you recall, doesn't really give two left who-ha's about his son and promptly tells Emma to leave.

Meanwhile, Gray is struggling. He's struggling with survivor's guilt, for one, but also because his saving grace for so many years -- Emma's face and her stories -- they're starting to fade. It scares him. Thanks to a friend (go, Parker!) he finds a way to get in contact with the girl who has always had his whole heart.

This addition to the series was just lovely. Everything about this book just did it for me. Timeline-wise, this was a quick one. Where book one spanned a good chunk of time, this one did not. This one was about Emma and Gray finding their ways back to one another, and finding it in each of their hearts to love the other again --

-- but really, neither has fallen out of love with the other.

I love that Emma is still headstrong. She's learned to be tougher over the years and she's learned how to put her foot down. This is not the exact same high school Emma we knew. Tough times taught her to strengthen her shield, and she's done so extremely well. Emma has made choices over the last few years that aide her daughter. She works three jobs, she gave up the college of her dreams, she lives off of three hour power naps... Yes, she's a young mom...

...but she's got that mom vibe down really well.

Granted, when you look at your daughter and see her daddy, who you love and miss, and when she asks for a story to make it better, and you hear her daddy, who you love and miss... It'd be hard not to bundle her close and never let her go. But besides that? Emma's a good mom. She's made her sacrifices and she believes they were the right ones.

Gray isn't naive to believe that Emma has stopped living when he left. He left because as much as he loved her, he felt she could do so much better. In hindsight, he regrets not giving her more choices, especially when he learns she's kept a child from him. He has the right to be angry and upset, as he was for a moment, but it wasn't like he gave her a way to communicate with him. He knows, though, that Emma was once his saving grace, and he'd do anything to get her back to that place.

Nothing’s felt right since the moment I left her. Three years of unsettledness gone in a hug.

...My lips touch the top of her head and press. It’s not a kiss. More of a claim. This woman is mine. I’ll beg and plead, do whatever it takes. I’ve been a dead man walking for years, hurting and hardened, looking for an outlet and suffocating on my mistakes. I’ve been wrong. Been scared. Been a motherfuckin’ fool. The answer to my problems has always been right here, with her.

It should be no surprise that Gray wants to know about Emma's life and about their daughter. It should be no surprise that Gray wants to keep them both in his life -- and he hasn't even met the little girl named for his mother yet.

I, personally, am not naive enough to think that from here on out, every thing's going to be rainbows and butterflies. We do, after all, have two more books to read about this little family.

...and I will be sitting here, anxiously awaiting for them to come.

coming soon !

Grayson Ford and Emma Kinglsey—close since they were kids, opposites in every way. He’s the stuff high school crushes are made of, Mister Popular, and captain of every team. She’s artsy, cute, and not in his league, though fully aware of Summerland’s "I Dream of Dating Grayson Ford" support group.

I can’t say no. The girl’s had my heart since before I knew it went missing.

He hides a life of hell. His father hates him, his mother’s gone. Emma is his only savior, yet she doesn’t know her power over him. She’s the only girl he wants, the only one he could ever tell—though he won’t.

I’m stronger, bigger, more of a man than he’ll ever be, but because I ruined his life, I’ve taken his crap, his attacks, the vulgar nature of his existence.

Until she discovers Gray’s embarrassment, his humiliation. Emma fights for him, for a chance. Theirs is a Cinderella story that she believes impossible. But as the layers peel back, it’s just a guy who needs a girl in order to keep breathing.

My mind is already doodling Mrs. Grayson Ford in imaginary notebooks. He has no clue where my head is at… But, given that I didn’t see what just happened coming, maybe I have no clue where his head is at either.

{ team titan } BLACK DAWN || cover puzzle !

We are so thrilled to share the first part of the cover of BLACK DAWN by Cristin Harber with everyone today, as well as a sneak peek!

blackdawn-day1

{ excerpt } .

She moaned into the kiss and bit his bottom lip. “God…”

Apparently, that was the wrong thing to say because he stopped and left her cold and wanting. She wouldn’t beg, wasn’t that type of girl. But, inside, she could cringe and cry for something she hadn’t had in forever, a surge of passion.

“What’s wrong, Parker?”

Dark, hungry eyes studied her. “I know everything about you, except who you are.”

“I’m me.”

“Exactly.”

She wanted to forget about everything on the outside world. “What does that mean?”

“I’ve worked with you for years, didn’t know it. I protected you from your ex-fiancĂ©’s crap, didn’t know that either. You’re vulnerable and offering me exactly what I want.”

“What’s that?”

He squeezed her body. “You.”

“You’re saying no?” she whispered.

“I’m not going to take you on a couch in a safe house.” His blue eyes neared black. She’d never seen a look more intense, more at war.

He strengthened his hold on her. “You want this?”

She nodded, knowing that this kiss was all she’d ever have of him.

“You’ve wanted this?”

Her eyes sank shut. Parker was calling her on it, and she couldn’t lie. “Yes.”

Long seconds ticked by. Their cheeks touched then he pushed off the couch. “Then that’s why.”

review || HART ATTACK { blog tour }

We all have those little "shameful" things we don't want anyone to know -- guilty pleasure TV (Dance Mom's, anyone?), pickles dipped in ketchup, reading epilogues first....

Wait, no one else relates? Oy...

I know I've mentioned it in FIGHTING THE FALL, but sometimes (err... most times) I read the epilogue first. I am that lady hanging out in the book aisle at Target, reading the last ten pages of a book. Yes, that's me.

When it's an author I don't know, but the title or cover calls to me, it helps me gauge the author's writing style. It also helps me decide if it's a "must buy NOW" book, or a "put on the list" book. And sometimes, if my schedule is hectic enough, the "must buy NOW" list turns into an immediate Nook or Kindle download, and I'm reading it as I finish my shopping.

I'm not as bad at epilogue reading, I've found, with the addition of eBooks to my life... but if I really want to know how it ends... I will know. I like happily ever afters (which, of course, makes real-life painfully hard for the notoriously single, socially awkward chica over here, because I can't magically go to my epilogue and double check that life turns out OK).

HART ATTACK was one of those need-to-know books.

...and I needed to know yesterday.

I was at work, getting ready for an 0400 vital assessment on a kiddo when I finally managed to transfer the .mobi file from my email to my kindle (the file was too large the first 3 times I tried). I was getting impatient -- surely I wouldn't need my computer and USB cord to transfer this book over.

So when it was downloaded, I was jonesin' for Roman and Beth HARD. Let's be honest... I'd been jonesin' since the cover reveal... Nah, make that GARRISONS CREED.

To the epilogue I went.

And after reading the last three pages (that's all that I'd read, honestly), I broke out into a HUGE grin and thought (ear muffs, you virgin ears) "I'm so fucking excited".

...and then I had to be responsible and work, and Roman and Beth were put aside until I could read from page one.

To say I was excited for HART ATTACK, then, would be a severe understatement. And as much as I'm excited for Parker's book (BLACK DAWN!!), I'm a bit sad that this Titan group is going to be all married off soon...

My Rating:

Outside of Titan Group, there are few people that Roman Hart would die for. He’s a soldier, a protector, and he’s haunted that one of the people he should’ve been able to protect didn’t let him. That was years ago, and now a hardened heart and a cocky attitude are his impenetrable shields, until one woman—one challenge—drives him to distraction.

On the outside, Beth Tourne has it all. Luxury car, gorgeous condo, and a job partying with the rich and famous. It’s a plush CIA cover, but she wants more. Anything for an adrenaline rush that can override her guilty numbness and let her forget the tragedy she never saw coming.

Their scars make them perfect operatives. Their mirrored pasts give them deep, wounded reasons to stay alone. But the more they ignore the tension, the more vulnerable they become. Survival means trust. In one another, behind closed doors, and on the job. The only way they’re making it out alive is if they find peace while waging a war.

{ review } .

To begin...

Our hero is Roman, best friend to Cash; big brother to Nic; .......eye candy to Beth.

Our heroine is Beth, best friend and once-handler to Nic; eye candy and verbal sparring partner to Roman.

In GARRISON'S CREED, if you read it, you know that Beth thinks Roman's good looking, and vice versa. However, opening this book, Beth wants to stay firmly in the friends-zone. And while Roman thinks Beth is a fine-one to look at... there are times he wants to hate her -- she got years with his sister that he didn't.

But that aside...

He rather enjoys the little game they play -- verbal sparring and almost touching, always stopping just a millisecond 'in time'.

The problem is, though... to Beth it's not a game. Girlfriend has some serious hangups (not that I in any way blame her for them). She would like it to be, I'm sure, but she has a major attraction to this guy, and she can't afford to feel anything for a man.

"...but that's... not what's on my mind." His eyes held hers and the look could've melted the arctic shelf on a winter day.
"What is?" she asked, thought she knew the answer.
"Games."
Maybe she didn't. "Excuse me?"
He laughed quietly. "Doesn't matter."
Disappointment bled through her veins. She wanted to hear, 'You, Beth, you've been on my mind.'
Shit. No, she didn't want that... Actually, yeah she did. Beth bit her lip, confused and frustrated and angry.
When they do give in (which happens more than once, both during and before this story) and do some heavy-petting and whatnot, Beth always somehow manages to step away and stop the process -- hence Roman calling it a game. And while the game is frustrating, it's what he can get of Beth, so the game he will gladly play.

However, as you read and find out, Beth has a pretty gripping secret that always causes her to stop abruptly, for the hot blood to run cold, for the fears and guilt and betrayal to seep in. So while Roman is pushing to move forward... so is his sister, who is extremely pro-Roman-and-Beth.
Nicola was still laughing because she didn't know the nightmares were back. Didn't know how Beth craved and feared Roman's touch. Nicole, without the reminder being shoved in her face, forgot about Beth's history and really wanted her best friend and her older brother to get together. Beth couldn't blame Nicole. So much time had passed.
Cash pulled Nicole against his chest. "What's with you, sweet girl?"
{...}
Finally, Nicola stopped laughing and deadpanned. "I have no idea what you're talking about."
Oh! I love that excerpt for the Nic and Cash-ness of it, too. Quick note while I'm thinking it (total 'SQUIRREL!' moment, I apologize). I have always loved Cash's use of 'sweet girl' when talking to Nic. Roman, being best buds with Cash, starts to call Beth 'party girl' (when she was undercover as such, and when she's not being the true Beth) and 'pretty girl'. Aw. Seems Cash has rubbed off on his best buddy. Back to your regular programming...

I love how Roman goes all protective-bear over Beth when she confides in him about her job -- even though she mistakes it for just friendly-concern, when in fact, it's one part jealousy to one part more-than-friends-concern.

And I love how Jared goes all protective-bear over Roman when he's in a hospital room and Beth is apparently in the wrong one.
Jared glared. "Get your ass up and in there, so he doesn't wake alone."
Oh, and just one more protective-bear Roman moment, but it made my heart go all soft and fluttery:
He chucked a pillow at her. "Don't sleep with him."
She laughed but her heart hurt.
"I'm serious, don't do it." His jaw muscles flexed.
I don't know why, but that really sealed the deal for me on these two. The way I read it, all I see is this big bad Titan dude, nearly pouty over the idea of her sleeping with some guy for the job... And he's pouting because he's protective, jealous, and wants her for himself.

When Beth's past catches up to her, and guilt doesn't just seep, but flow, she turns that guilt into full fledged (wannabe-)hatred toward Roman. But when she starts using harsh terms to describe what the two of them have, instead of getting mad, Roman pretty much laughs in her face.
He smiled. He fucking smiled, then crossed his arms. "Which apparently sucks for you, since you also love me."
Then as he watches her unfold, rather than panic, he's a strong wall for her to lean on. There's just something about a strong man just being there that does a girl in.

Part of what I enjoyed immensely while reading this book was ALL the side-Titan stories. I have always loved seeing Colby and Mia (Mia is, after all, the cook in the Titan family); we see Sugar often (as she's Boss Man's wife, that one's a given); obviously, we're going to see Nic and Cash interact, as they're both Titan.

But seeing a sick Rocco, and mimicking his lovely Kitten:
"You think Caterina Savage has any intention of letting the flu in our house? It'd be all, 'ay Dios mio, spray down with Lysol."
...and seeing him, head in arms on table, begrudgingly sitting through meetings but pulling up his big-boy-britches and going full Titan... I just love Rocco.

And I love Boss Man calling out Roman and Cash whenever and wherever Nic is concerned:
"You good being the eyes on the inside, princess?"
She nodded. "Of course."
Boss Man turned to Roman and Cash. "Brother or husband have a problem with that, speak up now so she can tell you to cut the crap."
Even though we do see a lot of Cash and Nic, Cash and Roman having a 'heart to heart' was a favorite of mine, as well (scene from after Nic leaves Roman's house, after he prepares a 'freaking Betty Crocker' meal of frozen entrees):
"What I've known is I've wanted Beth in my bed for a while."
"Say what you want, man. I've seen you chasing her since day one."
Roman shook his head. "Just have a hard time walking away from a challenge. A feisty, irritating, challenge.
"Roman, man, think about what you're saying."
"What?"
"Beth's not a challenge. Shit."
"I don't have it in me."
Cash's jaw worked back and forth. "You ever going to forgive Nicola?"
"Already have."
"Bullshit, man. She still feels the angry vibe. You get that, right?"
Roman ignored him.
"It hurts her." Cash crossed his arms.
"No--"
"Here it is, Roman. Since maybe your head's too far up your ass to know. [Nic] did what she had to do. And no one in the goddamn world was more devastated than me. You got that? No one. You're her brother. But she was mine. And I couldn't say a fuckin' thing. I was angry, so lost you can't imagine. But she is back and she had her reasons that included keeping your ass alive. Gotta forgive her. Gotta just let it go."
Silence. Roman rubbed his chin, not sure he'd ever heard the situation put to terms like that before, and sure as hell not thinking about it from Cash's perspective.
"Don't ignore Beth because you're angry at Nic."
"I'm not."
"Never mind." Cash laughed. "Sometimes you have to figure stuff out on your own.....You, my friend, are so far gone. And watching you deal with this?" Cash waved a hand over their frozen dinner remnants. "Makes me pretty damn happy for raw kale and a woman I can got home to...Something to think about."

 And speaking of Nic....

So we know I love watching the big, bad alpha men of (really any) romance novels break down and cry (FIGHTING THE FALL, anyone?), but when Nic breaks down? Oh my... She's one tough cookie who's made some pretty hard decisions in her young life, so watching her break was nearly as heart wrenching as any alpha male doing the same.

So while reading back over this review, it seems as if I just loved HART ATTACK for all of the revisits, I enjoyed Roman and Beth falling in love. I enjoyed watching Roman fall, and I enjoyed watching Beth struggle to accept that it's ok to move on, and that Roman was willing to stand there for her. While Roman isn't the hardass of Titan, he's also not the cuddly one, either (is there one...?). If anyone were "soft", I'd mayybeee give that title to Cash, but really he's just a happy-go-lucky kind of dude. Where Beth is concerned, though, Roman's just a big ol' teddy bear and I love him for it.

I have so many notes and highlights in this book, it's not even funny. I tried to keep some things for you, the reader, to find out on your own; if I didn't, this review would have been much... much... much longer, trust me.

Thank you, Cristin, for bringing Titan alive again. I will be terribly sad when their chapter is closed, but excited to see where Delta is going..!
