Search and Rescue, book 1
★★★★
SOURCE: PUBLISHER via NETGALLEY
In the remote Rocky Mountains, lives depend on the Search & Rescue brotherhood. But in a place this far off the map, trust is hard to come by and secrets can be murder…
As the captain of Field County’s ice rescue dive team, Callum Cook is driven to perfection. But when he meets new diver Louise “Lou” Sparks, all that hard-won order is obliterated in an instant. Lou is a hurricane. A walking disaster. And with her, he’s never felt more alive…even if keeping her safe may just kill him.
Lou’s new to the Rockies, intent on escaping her controlling ex, and she’s determined to make it on her own terms…no matter how tempting Callum may be. But when a routine training exercise unearths a body, Lou and Callum find themselves thrust into a deadly game of cat and mouse with a killer who will stop at nothing to silence Lou—and prove that not even her new Search and Rescue family can keep her safe forever.
{ about katie ruggle } .
When she’s not writing, Katie Ruggle rides horses, shoots guns, and travels to warm places where she can SCUBA dive. Graduating from the Police Academy, Katie received her ice-rescue certification and can attest that the reservoirs in the Colorado mountains really are that cold. While she still misses her off-grid, solar- and wind-powered house in the Rocky Mountains, she now lives in Rochester, Minnesota near her family.

I fell for Lou and her spunky ways in the free novella, On His Watch. I really enjoyed the introduction and build up of her character -- so much so, that I was blindsided that she wasn't the heroine of that particular story. While all of the characters were being introduced, I felt that there was a large weight on her presence (regardless of how her joining the crew wasn't exactly believable in my mind) so it simply made sense that she would be the lucky heroine to our hero in that book. Still don't agree with the way it had been written, but hey, that's me.
It did, however, give the reader a lot to wait and hope for, because her book would be the official 'start' to the series. And I have to say: Lou and brooding Callum made a great fit.
Lou was running from her old life, but she should have expected it to catch up with her eventually -- as it does in this book. What she has now that she didn't then, though, is the support of her crew -- which includes her instructor, Callum.
While he enjoyed her quirkiness and determination (something that we've seen in spades where this woman is concerned), he knows something is off about Lou; if it weren't for his own past, he would try to look into it, try to figure it out... but he has other things to worry about. Lou has this ability to just throw herself at you, though, and he didn't have a chance to back down...
Their story is rocky and full of suspense as their pasts come to collide; it's that aspect that pushes the story from start to finish. I could have used a bit more on the romance side, but I did enjoy the looks into Lou and Callum's minds. I enjoyed this book a bit more than I did the former; I hope that each book in this series gets better as Ms. Ruggle stretches her writing wings and grows!
