{ review } .
For a first book, I found this to be a great start -- what better way to introduce yourself as an author, as well as introducing a series, with a quick novella involving two people with a history and helping them find their HEA?
And for the most part, the book worked. The writing style is an easy one to get lost in, and the dialogue felt real. However...
With the easy banter between Derek and newcomer, Lou, I was expecting a different outcome. I didn't really like Artie's storyline and found her to be weak, which further aided my dislike of her. I also wasn't quite sure of the logistics of Lou just coming up to the guys before a show-and-tell event and signing up: just. like. that. Surely it's not that easy. And then to be put on the spotlight? Unlikely.
There were multiple view points which worked for the story, yet still managed to annoy me just enough. We get insight from adults as well as children, so it was kind of fun at least. The suspense was definitely there, too.
I feel that with a longer piece of material, this book could have been a higher rated on for me. With less Derek-Lou engagement and more Artie history, I probably could have gotten on that train no problem, but written as it was, I personally was disappointed.
That said -- Katie Ruggle is indeed talented and I feel that she will find her spot in the romantic suspense world with no problem at all. And my favorite quick talking, banter lashing female is next, so I'm sure I will enjoy the next story!
