{ review } .
I did not think Kaleb could redeem himself in my eyes.
No way, Jose.
We start out with Jade in a promiscuous position and Kaleb, her new commander, catchers her and the other, and repremands her in a not so politically correct way. How she starts to grow feelings for him was initially beyond me.
As for Kaleb -- he was emersed in jealousy, and that green monster didn't look good on him, nor did it have him making very sound decisions at first. But like I said, he grew on me.
I liked Kaleb's relationship with his close friends. I especially loved it when they ribbed on him for liking a girl (after they get over the fact he had a woman on his team). Jade's reputation in the field speaks for itself but she's fought for her position in the military and she tries extremely hard not to compromise it.
The battle scenes were certainly well done, however the last one, while the most emotionally charged, had me questioning the complete characterization of Jade. I understood the emotion, but it kind of wasn't in line with the hard-assed woman she portrayed herself to be. But, heck, Kaleb becomes her weak point...
The end is a really nice cliff -- be prepared. This book was named for Jade's initial call sign, and book two, Fire, is Kaleb's. I'm excited to see what happens -- Kaleb wormed his way into my heart, and I have very high hopes for the man.
