{ about emmy curtis } .
Emmy Curtis is an editor and a romance writer. An ex-pat Brit, she quells her homesickness with Cadbury Flakes and Fray Bentos pies. She's lived in London, Paris and New York, and has settled for the time being, in North Carolina. When not writing, Emmy loves to travel with her military husband and take long walks with their Lab. All things considered, her life is chock full of hoot, just a little bit of nanny. And if you get that reference...well, she already considers you kin.{ excerpt } .
“You promised to come find me, but it felt like you were promising more.” Her voice wavered as she attempted to cross her arms over her breasts. He tried to keep his eyes on her face. There was no way he could lie to her, not with her standing there, naked and vulnerable.
“I did promise”—he paused—“but I probably was in no shape to promise anything.” And now he wanted to promise her everything, but still wasn’t sure if he should. “I’m sorry. I should have called. Written. But it never felt like the right time…” I didn’t want to hurt you. I never deserved you.
“Did you think about me?” she asked softly.
His dick was heavy and hot in his pants. He didn’t answer her immediately, wondering if he should admit to his weakness. He was trying control this dynamite, trying to get some control over the room again, when every part of his brain wanted to lose itself in her.
“Every day. I…”—He stopped himself going too far. Past the point of no return—“Every day.”
Her crossed arms dropped, as well as her gaze. His body started working without permission.
He couldn’t even put up a token resistance. An honorable one. Honor was already in his rearview mirror.
He tugged his T-shirt over his head and slowly went to her. Slowly so he could marvel at her, the sudden light in her eyes.
He was far from certain. About what he wanted from her, about the wisdom of getting entangled—because he had no doubt that is exactly what he was doing. With every step he was getting irrevocably entangled in Molly.
Excerpt 3
He pulled his hand away, and she moaned, opening her eyes. He gazed at her for a second, and pulled her upright and put his hands on her shoulders. “You deserve all the promises in the world. I’m just not there yet. I’m—”
She laid her fingers against his lips. “Shhh. I’m not asking for any promises. I’m not asking for tomorrow. I’m not making that mistake again. I’m not asking for your soul, either.” She frowned. “I just want now. This second. I just want you.”
He held her gaze for a couple of seconds, as if measuring her sincerity. And then he dropped his head. “I don’t des—”
“Don’t say that. You might get to choose what you deserve. But I do too. I deserve this.” She wanted to stamp her foot. “I deserve you. I waited so long. Thought about you for so long. Said ‘no’ to so many dates. You ruined this past year for me. So the way I see it, you owe me now.”
He raised his head with the beginnings of a smile playing around the corners of his mouth. “I owe you, huh?” He narrowed his eyes and walked her backward until her calves hit the bed.
“Yes you do,” she replied in a whisper. “And I intend on collecting.”
{ review } .
We first met David and Molly in PUSHING THE LIMITS, when Molly was a bit-too-naive worker bee of Harry's, and David saved her... and was remarkably well on his feet for being inebriated most of the time.
...if you didn't read PUSHING THE LIMITS, no worries, it's not necessary, but it is a good insight into these two characters.
I didn't get the same almost flighty sense with Molly that I did the first time, and David's overall personality was changed -- but his I expected. The man is sober these days.
The one woman who is always on his mind, the one he knows is going to be at the black-tie affair he goes to and doesn't want to talk to but does want to see... well that's Molly. Molly has been his saving grace, his angel in disguise, and while he thinks she can do better than him and doesn't want to burden.
These two... while much of the story reminded me of Matt and Harry (they are the same professions and met under the same circumstances), David and Molly had a much different story. I liked that they had a semi-decent history, but both had changed since the time last year they knew one another. Like Matt and Harry's story, though, I didn't connect as deeply as I did with the first two books in the series and it saddened me. I'm not entirely sure where my disconnect was with these two -- Emmy does a great job with Molly and her career field, and David and his daily battles. They work very well together, professionally and personally.
Emmy's writing, again, is nearly flawless. I have always felt that her dialogue and monologues are well thought out and feel real -- true conversations, true thoughts. David and Molly had hot moments and sweet moments and I truly enjoyed their growth from the previous to this book. The suspense was well done -- starting with Molly's attempt at giving something to a VIP shortly before being shot down.
I great addition to the series, just not my favorite. I am excited to see that Emmy has 2 more books ready to come, with COMPROMISED coming in early March!
