Washington, D.C., Metro Police Detective Sergeant Sam Holland needs a big win to salvage her career--and her confidence--after a disastrous investigation. The perfect opportunity arises when Senator John O'Connor is found brutally murdered in his bed, and Sam is assigned to the case. Matters get complicated when Sam has to team up with Nick Cappuano, O'Connor's friend and chief of staff...and the man Sam had a memorable one-night stand with years earlier. Their sexual chemistry still sizzles, and Sam has to fight to stay focused on the case. Sleeping with a material witness is another mistake she can't afford--especially when the bodies keep piling up.

If you're looking for a happily ever after book... this one isn't for you. It's a happy for now type book -- but only because this series follows Sam and Nick, a couple in their thirties who once meant something to one another, fell apart... and found themselves back together again.

What I liked about Sam's character in this introduction to this couple, was that while she's a female in a highly male dominated field, she doesn't walk around with a chip on her shoulder. But at the same time, she's not soft. After a case gone terribly wrong, she has beaten herself up, black and blue, and when she finally steps foot back in the precinct and talks to the man she 'once' considered an uncle... you can feel how much pressure she puts on herself, but also how much love she has for the job.

When we first meet Nick, it's under terrible circumstances. He works for a man in politics... but the man has been his best friend since college. Watching the wheels of emotion Nick goes through in such a small span of word count... I couldn't help but feel for the guy.

I enjoyed these two finding their way back to one another; I like the ground that they have for a relationship and I love the way they treat one another. I totally just read the synopsis for book 10 (yes, 10) and I cannot wait to continue working on this series! I love Sam and Nick.
