I have enjoyed LP Dover's books for some time now, and I have come to accept that her books are written in an easy-to-read style. I know that when I pick them up, some of the sentences won't necessarily flow and that some of the thought patterns don't necessarily depict a mid- to late-twenty year old, but often seem to be the thoughts of a teen... But the style works for her, so I've learned to open the book and enjoy it.
So imagine my surprise when I opened Catching Summer -- while her style hasn't changed greatly, I'm starting to wonder if that particular style was simply for her fighting stories... { However, the one thing that continued to bother me was Summer referring to her nursing license as certifications -- she may have them, but it's her license that allows her to work }.
When Summer's husband was killed, she had to endure the beating herself -- but she couldn't watch it, she was forced to sit there and listen, blindfolded, as men slowly killed her husband all while taunting to him what they'd later be doing to his wife. It's quite understandable that the woman is terrified to move on.
At the urging of a friend, she finally gets the help that she needs with a therapist who becomes a friend... as much as one can in the chosen profession. Her opening up to him and growth has him happy and urging her to move on with her life.
I loved that in an odd parallel sense, the way Summer meets Evan is similar to the way she met her late husband. She doesn't want to move on in the romantic sense, but Evan, who's not only her friend's brother but a professional athlete (points against him), works hard to earn Summer's trust.
The love story between these two was sweet to watch unfold. Of course, Ms. Dover throws in a nearly unexpected suspense line with players that you won't necessarily expect... keeping everything fun and interesting and the pages flipping. The end was sweet, too, and I couldn't help but root for Summer and Evan.
