If Gunnery Sergeant Zane Hall wants to save his family’s ranch, he’ll need to fix up the buildings, stock the spread with cattle—and find a wife. The first two are easy with the help of his brothers, but getting hitched is proving more difficult. When he meets mountaineer Kenna North through an online ad, she seems like the perfect fit—at least in her e-mails. She wants the same thing he does: a temporary marriage to secure an inheritance. But when Zane meets Kenna, she’s nothing like he expects, and Zane finds himself changing his priorities, fast.

If Storm Willow wants to save her family’s seaside cottage, she’ll have to keep her boss happy—which means taking Kenna’s place and marrying Zane when Kenna is detained out of the country. As long as Storm acts her part, no one will know that she’s an imposter. But when she falls for the handsome Marine, Storm begins to wonder if holding onto the cottage is worth giving up on love.

Can a fake marriage lead to real happiness? Or is disaster just a heartbeat away?

{ review } .

I've said it a few times, but I'll say it again --

I'm not a big fan of stories-of-deception. I was excited about this book regardless of the fact that Storm is pretending to be someone else, but I was curious as to how long she would keep the faรงade up. In turn, I was bit disheartened to learn that it was a good 75% of the story. I understand that you can't have the huge climax of the story being in the middle (and with these deception stories, the grand climax is finding out that someone's been lying) but...

Anyways, regardless...

Zane may be my favorite Hall brother. He's honest with "Kenna" upfront -- he's looking for a quick marriage of convenience, they just need to fool his great Aunt Heloise. His two other brothers can deal with the baby part of the "Taking Back Crescent Hall" deal -- he just needs to be married.

Kenna... the real one... needs a husband of convenience, too, for her own inheritance. She arranges to go out to Montana but needs her assistant in tow. Storm is nothing if not loyal to a fault. When Kenna tells her that she's unable to make it, that she needs Storm to fill in for her and if she does she will get a huge bonus, Storm reluctantly agrees. She's been helping her mother foot the bills for years and without this bonus, her mother is going to lose her house.

But when Storm meets Zane, she's not sure it's a mission she can complete.

Her sense of loyalty is what keeps her going, but every time Kenna's name is mentioned is a cold wake-up call -- so she tells Zane her nickname is Storm.

...it's much easier to believe the lie when those involved are using your real name.

The first day they meet, it's as if two people who were searching for one another finally meet. Zane never believed in soulmates before, but there's something about Storm/Kenna that he's absolutely drawn to. Within moments, they flirt easily, interact well...

And within the day's time, he fully claims her -- because after all, how can you fool your family that this is the person you love if you don't know them intimately (or so says Storm)?
“...do you like curry?”
“Love it.”
“Beef or chicken?”
“Chicken.”
He handed her a container and a piece of naan bread to dip into the sauce. “I guessed right.”
“What about you? Beef or chicken?”
“I’m a cattle rancher. Beef, of course.”
“Huh. Which do you like better? Hamburgers or steak?”
“You got me there. Burgers. Don’t tell anyone, though.”
“I prefer steak,” she said.
“Ketchup or mustard?” he asked, playing along with the game.
“Ketchup.”
“I like mustard. And relish.”
“Bacon or sausage?” Storm asked, opening the container he’d passed her.
“Bacon.”
“Me, too.” He leaned over and kissed her, then pulled back, as surprised as she was. “Sorry. Just seemed like the right thing to do somehow.” He chuckled at her expression. She looked half-shocked, half-pleased. He had been about to say it wouldn’t happen again, but he thought better of it. It just might.
“Beer or wine?” he asked to smooth things over.
“Wine,” she said slowly, “although a cold beer on a hot day when you’re exhausted from a long bike ride is pretty sweet.”
“I prefer beer no matter what the occasion.” They were back on solid ground and he took a few bites of his curry before he asked another question. “Zombies or vampires?”
“Neither.” She made a face. “Surfing or skateboarding?”
“I’ve never tried either one. Have you?”
“I’m terrific at surfing. Not so great on a skateboard.” He filed that information away. “How about ice cream? Chocolate or vanilla?”
“Chocolate, of course.”
“Me, too,” he said, glad they were back to common ground. Her silence caught his attention after a moment and when he glanced her way he found her watching him. Was she… waiting for another kiss? He didn’t stop to think about it. He leaned over and snatched one before the moment was lost. “Mm, you taste like curry.”
“You, too.”
“Your turn.”
“My turn?”
“To ask a question.”
She took a bite, as if she wasn’t fazed by this game at all, but her cheeks were pink and he could tell she was trying to think of a good one. “House or condo?”
He snorted. “House, of course. Wait until you see mine. You’ll love it.” She would. Everyone loved the Hall. “Shower or bath?”
She choked on the bite she’d just taken and he pounded her back while she struggled to sip water from her cup. “That’s pretty personal, don’t you think?”
“We’re going to be married in six short weeks,” he reminded her. “I need to know these things.”
Her color deepened. “Shower for getting clean, bath for relaxing.”
“Same.” He waited for her to turn his way again. This time as he bent to kiss her, he took his time, tilting her chin up with his fingers so she met him halfway. He lingered over the kiss, his lips sliding over hers, then deepened the connection, tracing his tongue over hers, tasting her. When he pulled back she bit her lip and played with her fork, not meeting his gaze.
“In the bath or in the shower?” he asked.
“What do you mean?” From the way the flush spread over her cheeks he was pretty sure she knew exactly what he meant. “Where do you prefer to make love?”
Her eyes widened, then she quickly looked away. For a moment he thought he’d gone too far and he wanted to kick himself for spoiling the game before they’d hardly begun to play, but when he opened his mouth to apologize, she whispered, “Shower.”
Heat rushed through him at the thought of taking her that way. He’d be able to see all of her— to feel all of her as he lifted her against the bathroom wall and thrust inside her, the steam from the hot water swirling around them.
He forced himself back to the present. He couldn’t leave her hanging while he fantasized, not after she’d been brave enough to answer him. “Me, too.” He set his fork down and cupped her chin with both hands as he bent for another kiss. Somehow he found himself on his feet, Storm rising with him and he pulled her into an embrace, no longer holding back at all. Storm felt good in his arms. So good.
“Tongue or no tongue?” he asked, brushing kisses down her neck.
“Tongue.”
He rose up to capture her mouth again, cupping the back of her neck with one palm, sliding the other hand down her back. She kissed him back hungrily, twining her fingers behind his neck.
“Behind the ear or along the collarbone?” he asked.
“Collarbone.” He obliged, loving the taste of her. On fire with the knowledge that this game was approaching a line of no return. “Buttoned or unbuttoned?” he said, tugging at her shirt.
She hesitated and he waited for her answer, holding his breath.
“Unbuttoned.” Heat surged through him as he bent to the task and quickly had her shirt undone. Beneath it her breasts were displayed in lacy cups that made desire pulse through him again. He swept a kiss from one soft mound to the other, lingering in the hollow between them. He was about to ask another question when Storm spoke up.
“Bra or no bra?” she asked, burying her face against his shoulder.
“No bra.” He pulled her shirt from the waistband of her skirt and slid his hands up to the clasp of the lacy garment.
“Me, too,” she said and sighed when he undid the catch. He skimmed his hands under her bra and palmed her breasts.
“Hands or mouth?” he asked as he gloried in the sweet weight of her breasts.
“Mouth.” She moaned as he made short work of her shirt, pulling it off her shoulders. He tangled his fingers in her bra and tossed it aside, then bent to take one nipple in his mouth. She clung to him, arching her back to give him greater access, working at the buttons on his shirt in turn. He pulled back, shouldered his way out of the button down and tugged his T-shirt off in one swift motion. “Looking or touching?”
“Touching.” She smoothed her palms over his chest, then took his hands in hers and lifted them to her breasts again. He obeyed her silent request, tracing circles around them until he couldn’t hold back.
“Standing or lying down?” He nudged her toward the bed.
“Lying down.” She sat down on the mattress, pulling him down with her. He lifted her onto the center of the bed and climbed on top of her, kissing her again until they were both breathless. He allowed himself the chance to explore her fully, tracing kisses around the rosy peaks of her nipples, squeezing and feasting on them in turn as she moaned and gasped beneath him. When her fingers found the button of his jeans he stilled and pulled back.
Storm was every bit as beautiful as he’d thought she’d be with her blonde hair tossed in a halo around her face. “All or nothing?” she asked him in a voice so low he thought he’d dreamed the question.
Need pulsed through him again, hot and urgent. “All,” he said and bent to kiss her, helping her help him tug off his jeans. He groaned when her hands plunged down under the waistband of his boxers, and made quick work of losing them too. He knelt above her, letting her take a good long look. “Skirt on or off?”
She bit her lip. “Sometimes on, but today off.”
“Good answer,” he growled and found the fastening behind her back. His fingers were clumsy, but soon he was sliding the soft skirt off of her, the sight of the one scrap of lace and silk still left between them only increasing his desire to know everything about her. As he tossed her skirt away he bent to trail a string of kisses from her breasts down to her belly. He knelt between her legs and eased her panties off. “Foreplay or main event?” He dipped down to kiss her in an intimate place and she sighed.
“Both?”
“Of course.”
As you can see, they move fast -- autobahn fast. Zane, after just meeting her, flirting with her, and this occurrence, is convinced that Storm can be to him what Ella and Regan are to his brothers.

Zane has a mantra, and he repeats it to himself multiple times through the story -- what Zane Hall wants, Zane Hall gets. When the ruse is up and the trust comes to life, how will Zane react? Were his first thoughts about soulmates a result of love or lust?

I loved these two and wish we could have seen them together in CHRISTMAS BRIDE, but because that was published first, but MARINE is before it in series order, I understand that Storm couldn't make an appearance.

...doesn't make me happy, but I understood ;) Like with waiting to see more Dan and Sarah in AIRMAN, I can't wait to see Zane and Storm then, either!

Navy SEAL Dan Hemmins goes head to head with soldier Sarah Metlin to prove once and for all that woman can’t possibly qualify for an elite branch of the military, but when Sarah proves she’s not just one of the most qualified warriors he’s ever met, she’s also one of the smartest and sexiest, too, he’ll do whatever it takes to get close to her, even if he has to challenge her to another contest…or three…or five!

The Navy SEAL’s Christmas Bride is a Heroes of Chance Creek novella, and has also been featured in the SEALs of Winter box set.

I have to admit --

I wanted to get my hands on the SEALS OF WINTER set just for this book. Granted, after I finished this book I went on to read a few other books and learned that the set also had some novellas for other series I was reading so it was a win-win all the way around.

Cora has a knack for writing these quick romance books and not making them seem too unrealistic. Mason's story (which I will eventually need to 'back-blog' so I can share with you my full opinion), THE NAVY SEAL'S E-MAIL ORDER BRIDE was an exception, I think. Mason and Regan talked for a while via e-mail before Regan surprised him by meeting him at the airport. They had a bit of a rapport before actually meeting.

Austin and Ella's romance was quick, but really cute.

And then there's this book...

Dan, nor Sarah, are Halls, but they're coming to Crescent Hall for Christmas. Dan and Mason are buds, never having served on the same Teams but having run into one another and becoming friends over time. Having nowhere to spend the holiday, Dan accepts Mason's invite and goes to spend Christmas with his friend and the rest of the Halls. Additionally, he wants to put up a training facility and is looking for someone to partner with, and who better than another retired SEAL?

Sarah, also a soldier, is a long-time friend of Regan's. She comes from a family of soldiers and has a bit of a chip on her soldier -- she hates the she's a "mere soldier". She feels that as a female soldier, she's judged and not given a change to prove her worth. She's certain that men -- those in her family and those she's worked along -- would have a better opinion of her if she'd be allowed into Special Forces.

Sarah's chip gets to be a bit annoying. Heck, it starts a bit annoying:
...she dreaded having it flung in her face this Christmas by the Hall brothers, too. How many times did she have to fight the same battle?
She doesn't even know these men and she's already putting a negative label on them. When she's introduced to Dan, she sticks the same negative label on him.
They were all good looking in their own way, but the one who caught her eye wasn’t moving to greet Regan.
He was staring straight at her.
His upright bearing betrayed his military background. His wide shoulders, powerful legs and chiseled good looks would have made him at home on a male pinup calendar, but his watchful gaze told her everything she needed to know. This was the SEAL Regan had told her about. Dan Hemmins.
And he was by far the handsomest man she’d ever met.
Sarah told herself her sudden tension came from the knowledge he’d be just as stuck-up and full of himself as her brothers were, but it had little to do with his attitude and everything to do with a vision that flickered through her mind— his hands on her bare skin, his mouth taking possession of hers—
Hell, where had that come from? Sarah shook off the thought and stepped forward to meet Regan’s family, shaken by the direction her libido had taken her. Even if it had been some time since she’d gone out with a man, she wasn’t attracted to SEALs. She wasn’t attracted to men in the military, period. And this longing to find a man to share her life with that had been haunting her lately? That was just a ridiculous holdover from the fairy tales she’d read when she was a child. She didn’t need a man and she didn’t want one, either. She was fine on her own.
She moved to shake hands with Mason when Regan introduced him. Mason was as upright as Dan was, with a friendly smile, blue eyes and hair barely longer than Navy regulations would have dictated.
“Glad to meet you,” he said.
He introduced her to each brother in turn, then to two couples who had come for the holidays, and lastly he turned to the man who’d been staring at her ever since she got out of the truck. “This is another guest of ours this Christmas— Dan Hemmins. Dan just left the SEALs, like me. He’s thinking of starting an extreme training camp to put civilians through their paces, right Dan?”
Dan shook her hand, and held it a second longer than necessary. A glint in his eyes told her he liked what he saw when he looked her over. “That’s right. Nice to meet you, Sarah.”
She nodded, disconcerted by his frank appreciation. She was used to being surrounded by men in prime fighting condition, but Dan was something special. Suddenly she was conscious of the fact she’d just spent most of a day on planes and in airports. Her hair was mussed, her clothes were wrinkled and she was sure what little makeup she wore was smudged. She wished she’d spent more time on her appearance, but there wasn’t anything she could do about that now.
Dan went on. “The idea is to give people a taste of Navy SEAL training.” He grinned. “Watered down to their level, of course.”
His final sentence hit her like a splash of cold water. Military men had directed that same kind of condescension at her all too many times. “Of course,” she said, then hoped Mason and Regan missed her sarcasm. This was a holiday party. She didn’t want to make waves, but from that one comment alone she could tell Dan was just like her brothers— so sure he was better than everyone else. “
Regan told me you’ll be looking for a new job soon, too?” he said.
Sarah nodded, following Regan inside. “I’m thinking about leaving the Army. I’ll put my paperwork in after Christmas, unless I change my mind.”
“Army, huh?” He gave her a sidelong look. “No wonder you want to quit.”
She bristled at the comment, even though she knew his teasing was reflexive. Rivalry was always alive and well between the branches of the military. He probably thought he was flirting with her, but she wasn’t going there. “I notice you high-tailed it out of the Navy, SEALman. Probably got sick of being embarrassed all the time.” She hoped he realized now she could give as well as she could take. She wasn’t going to fall for him just because he had credentials. She slid a glance in his direction. Although he was awfully good-looking.
She doesn't even give the guy a chance...

When (my favorite reoccurring) obstacle course comes into play, it's all done from there. Sarah and Dan start a war of who's-better-than-who: Sarah does it to prove herself, and Dan... well, he wants Sarah to admit she wants him because he's not used to being ignored (not that he wants to like Sarah -- he doesn't date within the military).

Their conversation during the snow-shoe race was a turning point in their 'relationship' I think. Sarah goes all bitch-mode on him, but Dan hears beneath her words and hears what she isn't saying.

Even though this was the quickest romance in the HEROES set, I really enjoyed it. I hope to see more of these two in AIRMAN'S come late Spring!

THE SOLDIER'S E-MAIL ORDER BRIDE -- a summary and opinion

I was first introduced to Cora and this series through a 99 cent SEAL set of books. I mean, you can't really go wrong with a collection of 5-6 books for only 99 cents. Some of the stories were good, some mediocre, but when I stumbled into The Navy SEAL's E-Mail Order Bride... well, I was engrossed.

The idea behind this series is this: Aunt Heloise is giving the family ranch to her son, Darren, if the Hall boys don't get a snap in their behinds, and by snap, she means wives and at least one child, all in a year's time.

The Hall boys are all military men, each of them in a different branch. In Mason's book, a novella introducing this series, he came up with the plan to put out a Wife Wanted ad. Through this ad, he found Regan -- who really only answered it because it was funny and couldn't possibly be a real deal.

With The Soldier's E-Mail Order Bride, we meet one of the middle-of-the-pack brothers, Austin. He's getting out of the Navy, but with some deep regrets and a ton of emotional turmoil. But, to hold his end of the four-ended bargain, he puts out his own ad -- because Mason's ad just isn't giving him any luck.

Austin doesn't want a wife in the real sense. He wants someone who is ok being married in name only, who just wants to live a quiet, hardworking lifestyle for the next nine months. They would put up a ruse and so long as Heloise believes them, all is good.

Ella is an actress who just had her world crash down around her. On a whim, and as a way out of the tabloid eyes, she answers the ad and meets Austin in Montana. They get married quickly and quietly -- but when Heloise finds out about it and starts to look as if she's catching on to the game, they quickly add that they were planning on a reception in a month's time, too, to include the family that missed out on the church (yes, their wedding was still held in a church) wedding. When Heloise still isn't buying it, Ella throws in that they were renewing their vows, too.

As the days progress, Austin and Ella have a hard time sticking to their rule of 'no sex' -- they did it once, it was great, but there was no way it could happen again. But looks and touches and respect keep leading them back to each other. The more he feels happy with her, the more his survivor's guilt takes over his mind -- even though that same survivor's guilt throws thoughts in his head of his buddy, Donovan, giving him the go-ahead to be happy with Ella.

I enjoyed the banter and fighting between Regan and Mason as they stumbled around to make their Wife Wanted ad work. I really, really loved Ella and Austin.

...and I thought I enjoyed Regan and Mason's run through the Obstacle Course but... Ella and Austin have them beat. Guess you'll have to read to figure that one out.

While perusing Pinterest, I stumbled across this quote and all I could think
was this was totally Austin -- yes, Ella is Hollywood beautiful, but he sees so
much more in her. No matter how hard he tries to stay away, he just can't.
