The Carolina Cold Fury hockey team proves that love is a power play. As Sawyer Bennett’s New York Times bestselling series continues, the league’s most notorious party animal gets blindsided by the one that got away.

Off the ice, elite defenseman Hawke Therrien enjoys his fair share of booze and good times. And why shouldn’t he? He’s worked his way up from the minor leagues and made himself a star. The only thing Hawke misses from that life is the pierced, tattooed free spirit who broke his heart without so much as an explanation. She’s almost unrecognizable when she walks back into his life seven years later—except for the look in her eyes that feels like a punch to the gut.

Vale Campbell isn’t the same girl she was at twenty. As crazy as she was about Hawke, her reckless behavior and out-of-control drinking were starting to scare her. She had to clean up her act, and that would never happen with Hawke around. Cutting him loose was the hardest thing Vale ever had to do—until now. Because she’s still crazy about Hawke. And if he could ever learn to forgive her, they just might have a future together.

Years ago, Vale broke Hawke into pieces and told him she didn't love him anymore. Hawke was, understandably, blindsided -- he wanted to hang out with his friends a little longer on his last night home, but he would have gone home with her if she had phrased everything differently.

But no. They broke up, she didn't return his calls, and Hawke fought to put her out of his mind -- turning to random puck bunnies as his career unfolded and life became exciting again.

Fate would throw them back together again -- and they both realize that as much distance as they put between themselves, their hearts were still in sync.

I enjoyed Hawke and Vale's story. I found it to be well written (as all Sawyer Bennett titles are) and the characters well rounded. I have to say that, like Hawke, I was further blindsided when his and Vale's communication lines fully opened. That said, these two -- as much as they want to be with one another -- have a single fault and that is communication when it is absolutely dire.

I loved that Hawke was protective of his own heart this time. He felt that he'd been the wronged party in their break up and as much as he craves Vale, he's afraid of being fully hurt by her again -- and I. Loved. That vulnerability in this big bad, hockey playing man.

That's not to say that Vale was the one at fault through everything. She had her reasons, of course, and while I do wish she'd been more open from the start... well, there wouldn't be a story if she had been. I loved her friendships and I loved her ability to be a strong female in a much stronger male dominated field. I find that Ms. Bennett writes these females nearly flawlessly; they're enjoyable lead females to read.

This series has been so incredibly fun. I love everything from the drama, the romance, to the actual hockey scenes. I have yet to pick up a Cold Fury Hockey book that I don't enjoy to some aspect. Keep 'em coming!
